Architecture Design project
Semester 06

The site is located in Jalan Penang, George Town. This plot of land is shaded by Komtar and located right beside a junction of 5 roads, which are Jalan Penang, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Magazine, Jalan Dato Keramat and Jalan Gurdwara. On the site, there’s originally a row of shophouses with the name “Tye Kee Yoon” within the site boundary. We are giving an opportunity to preserve this building but our design is not allow to integrate with the building itself.

Penang Day of Future Past

In the P1A project, our team worked hard to uncover the hidden history of Goh Pah Teng and the lost identities of its roads. There were once six roads, which eventually became only five, with most people unaware of the true history behind this change. Changing road names is not just about updating signage—it also represents a loss of identity. These quiet streets, once shaded by Komtar, began to lose their cultural significance during the 1960s. Precious memories were replaced by colonizers, and the roots of the community were altered.

In this project, we focus on memories and explore ways to revive these precious histories through our design and programming.

The Story Of Brick Kiln Road

Brick Preparation

Before the 1960s, a working-class community lived here at a slow pace, taking pride in shaping the land with their own hands. This place was known as Brick Kiln Road, Hong Chia Lor, and Jalan Batu Bakar. After the 1960s, everything changed — the area lost much of its identity and memories.
