PROJECT 2B :
The Discovery Center
(Visitor Center for Kampung Morten, Malacca)
Project 2B, we are required to create a structure for their project that will enable users to "DISCOVER" information about the people, places, things to do, customs, history, and other aspects of Kampung Morten, Malacca. It will serve as a visitor center with the potential to include explanatory displays, a walk-through historical or cultural journey exhibition akin to a museum, and an interactive and interesting "edutainment" program, as well as places or regions to help the tour guide brief guests prior to trips. All of this data will be converted into areas that call for lyrical architectural touches.
In this assignment, we must design a discovery center at Kampung Morten, Malacca. We must immerse the significant value or characteristics of the place that represent the place well into our design for the building. The building must be monolithic and two storeys above ground level. The total floor area of the design scheme must be between 350sqm to 450sqm. We are required to consider the universal design. Besides, we are required to use the knowledge that we learned from Project 1 which is modifying elements, and immerse into our discovery building's design.
A village undergoing transformation, Kampung Morten, adapting to the new era while preserving its cultural identity through the bravery and determination of elders. The exposed RC concrete facades follow the site boundary lines facing to the west and stand strong portraying the strong values of elders in the process of adapting and revealing their ambition of maintaining their identity. It records the passage of time, just like Kg Morten, with the courage of elders, attempting to change from the past into modern society to avoid being forgotten. In the building, the interplay of light and shadow and ventilation by louvres and glass blocks, mirroring the tradition and urban. Covering the eastern facade are implementation of open and semi-open spaces overlooking the riverfront, portraying the villagers' cautious and thoughtful approach to modernization. It brings out their desire to adapt while preserving their cultural identity, ensuring their heritage is not lost in the rush towards progress.
The concept of transforming of Kampung Morten into an urban kampung was expressed in the building through the use of various materials.
The timber texture, for example, which gives a sense of kampung sentiments in feels and images, is constructed of aluminium.
Throughout the duration of this project, I exerted my utmost effort to challenge the boundaries of design, aided by the support and guidance of AR.IAN. I am profoundly thankful for the encouragement to venture into uncharted territories. This project has been a transformative learning experience, particularly in terms of designing within the context of the site.
During the teaching sessions, I absorbed a wealth of knowledge. Each lesson was treasured and diligently assimilated. I am grateful for the abundance of guidance and wisdom shared, which undoubtedly contributed to my growth as a designer. This project not only expanded my technical skills but also deepened my understanding of the creative process.
